Panama City was celebrating its third anual Panamá Bird Festival last October. This is an effort to bring visibility towards the many species of bird that inhabit the isthmus nation. With over 1,000 registered bird species, MiAmbiente has declared just over 30% of them endangered. Nevertheless, neighborhoods such as El Cangrejo stepping up to the challenge of protecting the wildlife that inhabits this area.

Amongst the highlights of the festival, was the unveiling of a plaque in Parque Andres Bello. Recognition is finally being given to the efforts made by the community to maintain the natural beauty that envelops the area. This beloved neighborhood was branded a “bird and tree friendly community”. “EL Cangrejo is the “bedroom” and guardian a large variety of birds that rest in the midst of a natural oasis, filled with flowers, trees and bushes that the community has defended in an effort to preserve them and allow them rest” said Flavia Cozarelli, executive director of the Alada Foundation, organizers of the Panama Bird Festival.

El Cangrejo and Recycling

Equally as important in aiding the conservation of wildlife are recycling efforts. Installing a new recycling point for a project called “Botellas de Amor” has been an innovation that Park Andres Bello has made. Recycling and reusing many of the  single use plastics currently being discarded in Panama City is Botella de Amor’s main goal. Alongside Nestlé, they have opened Panama’s first plastic recycling plant in Panama Pacifico.
